RTE Journalist Ray Kennedy Celebrates Son Ciarán’s Graduation
Ray Kennedy, a prominent journalist with RTE, expressed immense pride as his son, Ciarán, graduated from college with honours. The graduation ceremony took place at The Helix, Dublin, earlier this week, where the family celebrated this significant milestone together. Ciarán completed a five-year extended Master’s programme at Dublin City University, achieving a first-class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Ciarán’s academic journey has not been without its challenges. In July 2021, he was the victim of a violent attack while cycling home from his summer job with Ryanair. During the incident, he sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose and multiple bruises. His father publicly addressed the attack on social media, describing how Ciarán was assaulted by five individuals attempting to steal his bicycle. Fortunately, three passers-by intervened, aiding Ciarán and preventing further harm.
“I confirm my son was attacked on Friday night; he was cycling home after work. Five thugs outnumbered him, punched him, and broke his nose—black eyes and cuts,” Ray shared in his post. He expressed gratitude to those who helped his son during the ordeal, stating, “Without them, who knows? He’s on the mend now.”
Ray and his wife, Sandra, are also parents to a daughter, Aoife. The family has always been a priority for Ray, who made significant changes to his career to spend more quality time with them. Previously working with Sky News, he traveled frequently between Ireland and London. This lifestyle changed when Aoife was born in 2004.
Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Ray recalled a time when Aoife, then just two years old, entered the kitchen looking for her brother but did not recognize him. This prompted Ray to reassess his work-life balance. He explained, “Whatever she said, I realised she didn’t really know me or who I was, so from that point on things had to change.”
Since then, Ray has focused on creating meaningful experiences with his family, spending time in parks and engaging in activities together. “Kids are everything,” he stated, underscoring the importance of family in his life.
As Ciarán embarks on his professional journey with a strong academic foundation, the Kennedy family celebrates not only his achievements but also their resilience through challenging times.
