Tributes Flow as Philly Ryan, Tipperary Manager, Laid to Rest
Philly Ryan, the beloved manager of the Tipperary football team, was laid to rest on March 6, 2024, in a heartfelt ceremony at St Peter and Paul’s Church in Clonmel. The 57-year-old passed away unexpectedly on March 2, leaving behind a legacy that touched many lives in the world of Gaelic football.
During the funeral service, Ryan’s son, Shane, delivered an emotional tribute, describing his father as a “hero.” He recalled how Philly dedicated his life to coaching, starting from the under-six age group all the way to senior levels. Shane shared a poignant memory of his father’s early coaching style, recounting how he had once been pulled off the pitch for not contributing enough during a game. “Dad always wanted to get the best out of me,” Shane reflected, highlighting the profound influence his father had on his life.
Philly Ryan enjoyed a remarkable playing career as a goalkeeper for Tipperary, proudly representing the Premier County for 13 years. He was instrumental in securing the All-Ireland ‘B’ Championship thirty years ago. His passion for the sport eventually led him to coaching, where he nurtured young talent and guided the senior team, taking on the managerial role in August 2024.
Family Reflections and Lasting Impact
As Shane spoke about his father, his sisters, Amy and Katie, joined in to share their own memories. They highlighted the deep bond their parents shared, noting that their lives changed for the better when Philly met their mother, Anna, in 1990. “They were husband and wife and ultimate best friends,” Amy said, emphasizing the inseparable nature of their relationship over 35 years.
Katie added a poignant message from their mother, urging everyone to express their love while they have the chance. “If you love someone, tell them you love them because you never know when they’re not going to come back through the door,” she said. This sentiment resonated deeply with those in attendance, reflecting the unexpected nature of Philly’s passing.
Shane captured the essence of his father with a unique analogy, likening him to a Creme Egg: “Hard on the outside, but soft and full of sweetness on the inside.” He expressed profound gratitude for the love and support Philly provided throughout his life, stating, “He was our first love and now our greatest heartbreak.”
Community Mourning and Legacy
The impact of Philly Ryan extends beyond his immediate family. His contributions to Tipperary football have left an indelible mark on the community. Many former players and coaches attended the funeral to pay their respects, sharing stories that echoed Shane’s sentiments about Ryan’s character and dedication to the sport.
As a tribute to his memory, it is clear that Philly Ryan’s legacy will continue through the countless individuals he inspired, both on and off the field. His commitment to fostering talent and nurturing a love for Gaelic football will resonate for many years to come.
In this time of mourning, the community of Clonmel and Tipperary stands united in honoring a man who devoted his life to the sport and to those he loved. As Shane concluded, “This is just goodbye for now, until we meet again. My hero, my best friend, my dad.”
