Luas Services Suspended Again Amid Ongoing Citywest Riots
UPDATE: Luas services to Saggart have been suspended for the third consecutive night due to escalating violence around the Citywest Hotel. Authorities report that public disorder flared once again, forcing the tram company to limit operations between Tallaght/Belgard and Connolly only.
Last night, protests erupted into chaos, resulting in injuries to two Gardaí and the arrest of 23 individuals after rocks, bottles, and fireworks were thrown at the police, who deployed over 300 Gardaí to manage the situation. Earlier in the week, on September 26, 2023, six people were arrested and one Garda was injured during the unrest.
The disturbances began hours after a 26-year-old man was charged with the alleged sexual assault of a young girl on Garter Lane, adjacent to the Citywest complex. What started as a protest quickly escalated to large-scale violence aimed at law enforcement.
In a significant legal development, sixteen individuals are set to appear in the Dublin District Court today on various public order offenses, with one man facing charges of violent disorder. This unrest is part of a broader reaction to the state’s recent acquisition of the former Citywest Hotel, now serving as an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) center, housing approximately 1,200 Ukrainian refugees and 460 international protection applicants.
The ongoing disruptions have immediate implications for local commuters and residents, raising safety concerns and straining police resources. As the situation remains fluid, it is crucial for the public to stay informed on developments.
Authorities are urging calm as they investigate the root causes of the protests and implement measures to restore order. The community is left on edge as tensions continue to rise, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and resolution.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation unfolds.
