Limerick Residents Urged to Explore Care Options This Bank Holiday
As the October bank holiday weekend approaches, the HSE Mid West is encouraging residents of Limerick to explore various healthcare options available in their community. Instead of heading directly to the emergency department at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), individuals are advised to consider alternative services that may better meet their needs.
Alternative Healthcare Services Available
The HSE highlights the importance of utilizing GP out-of-hours services, which can refer patients to medical assessment units if necessary. For urgent medical issues outside normal hours, Shannondoc offers services from 18:00 to 08:00, Monday to Friday, as well as throughout the bank holiday weekend. Residents can reach them at 0818 123 500.
In addition, local pharmacies are available to assist with minor illnesses and can advise if a consultation with a GP is required. Injury and medical assessment units located in Ennis, Nenagh, and St John’s provide another pathway to care. These units are open from 08:00 to 20:00 for walk-in treatment of minor injuries including fractures, sprains, and burns. No appointment is necessary, and patients referred by a GP can avoid the €75 fee.
If residents feel uncertain about where to seek help, they are encouraged to contact their nearest injury unit for guidance. The contact numbers for these units are as follows:
– St John’s Injury Unit, Limerick City: 061 462132
– Ennis Injury Unit: 065 686 3121
– Nenagh Injury Unit: 067 42311
Emergency Department Access and Capacity
The Medical Assessment Units are accessible 16 hours a day, from 08:00 to 00:00, seven days a week. These units offer a direct referral pathway for GPs, ensuring prompt assessment and treatment for patients who might otherwise go to the Limerick emergency department.
The emergency department at UHL remains open 24/7 for the most acute and life-threatening conditions. However, the HSE has noted that the department is currently experiencing high levels of attendance as the holiday weekend approaches. To manage this, they are actively working to maximize patient flow within the acute hospitals and the broader healthcare system in the region.
As the bank holiday weekend draws near, the HSE Mid West emphasizes the importance of understanding available care options to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate treatment for their needs.
