Limerick Remembers Jack Ormston, Pioneer Supermarket Founder
UPDATE: Limerick City bids a heartfelt farewell to John F. (Jack) Ormston, a beloved figure and pioneer of local business, who was laid to rest today, October 24, 2023. Ormston, famed for establishing the first supermarket in the city, passed away peacefully on October 20.
The impact of Ormston’s legacy is felt deeply in the heart of Limerick. His innovative spirit transformed the shopping landscape when he opened Ormston’s Supermarket on Patrick Street in April 1961. Friends and family gathered at St Mary’s Cathedral to honor a man who not only changed how people shop but also embodied community spirit and generosity.
During the emotional funeral service, four of his sons delivered a moving joint eulogy, reminiscing about his creative marketing tactics that endeared him to many. “When parking fines were introduced,” his son Frederick shared, “Dad printed ads on similar paper, causing panic until people realized it was just a promotion for 10% off at Ormston’s hair salon.”
Ormston’s influence extended beyond business; he was a devoted family man, a father to nine children and a proud grandfather to 17 grandchildren. His family shared that he was a regular Mass attendee and instilled a strong work ethic in his children. His son Marcus noted that all seven sons served at Mass, emphasizing their father’s sense of pride in their achievements.
The Ormston family has deep roots in Limerick, dating back to the 1800s. Jack’s journey began in Belfield Park before moving to London as a teenager, where he sent money home to support his family. This act of generosity laid the groundwork for a life devoted to giving back, as detailed by his son Jason during the service.
In a touching moment, the family recalled how Jack and his wife, Rosemary, married in 1966, spent nearly every night together. Even during his time in Corbally House Nursing Home six years ago, the family ensured he felt their love and support daily.
Frederick poignantly reminded attendees of the importance of awareness surrounding dementia, emphasizing that simple acts of kindness can significantly impact those affected.
As the Mass concluded, the sons honored their father in his signature style, saying, “Bye for now,” a phrase he often used with his children. The legacy of Jack Ormston will live on in the hearts of many, especially within the vibrant community he helped shape.
As Limerick reflects on Ormston’s remarkable life, the community is urged to celebrate his contributions and remember the values he instilled in his family. May he rest in peace, having left an indelible mark on Limerick City.
