Limerick Council Honors Local Heroes Lee Reeves and Southside Group
UPDATE: Limerick City and County Council has just honored two exceptional contributors to the community at a special reception in Dooradoyle. The ceremony, hosted by Cllr Catherine Slattery, celebrated Lee Reeves, a local boxing champion, and the Southside Ladies Group, both of whom have made significant impacts in Limerick.
The Southside Ladies Group, also known as the Southside Women’s Shed, received accolades for their unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community in Southill. Founded by Karol Canty, the group meets weekly at the Southill Family Resource Centre to engage in arts, wellness, and beautification projects. Their annual International Women’s Day celebration has become a multicultural highlight in the local calendar, drawing attention to the importance of community and empowerment.
Meanwhile, Lee Reeves, a professional boxer known as El Champo, has risen to prominence not just for his sports achievements but also for his inspiring advocacy for mental health. After claiming the NABF Light Welterweight Champion title in Canada in 2022, Lee faced personal tragedy with the loss of his mother Cathy and brother Tony. In a remarkable display of courage, he recently risked his life to save a woman from the River Shannon, near the site of his mother’s tragic passing. This act has solidified his status as a true local hero.
Lee’s dedication extends beyond the boxing ring; he is actively involved with Treaty Suicide Prevention, advocating for mental health awareness and support. His creative initiatives, such as Knuck & Knuckle and Paint Punch, empower young people in Limerick to express themselves and find hope amid challenges.
The reception was filled with family, friends, and community members, all celebrating the honorees’ invaluable contributions to Limerick’s social fabric. The event underscores the importance of recognizing local heroes who strive to uplift their communities and inspire others.
This recognition of both the Southside Ladies Group and Lee Reeves highlights the power of community engagement and individual resilience, reminding us all of the impact one person can have in creating a supportive environment. As these stories develop, they serve as a call to action for others to get involved and make a difference in their own communities.
Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring event and the ongoing contributions of these local heroes.
