Transport Minister Urged to Fund Western Rail Corridor NOW
UPDATE: The Minister for Transport is facing urgent calls to prioritize funding for the Western Rail Corridor as pressure mounts from officials and local representatives. Mary Considine, CEO of Irish Rail, has confirmed that the first phase of the project, connecting Athenry to Claremorris, could be operational within just three years once funding is secured.
During this week’s Oireachtas Transport Committee meeting, Galway East TD Louis O’Hara emphasized the critical need for investment. He stated, “This corridor is essential for regional connectivity and economic growth.” Considine echoed his sentiments, highlighting that current funding constraints are hindering progress.
The Western Rail Corridor is seen as a vital link that can enhance transport options in the West of Ireland, fostering economic development and reducing travel times for commuters. With over €1.5 million needed to initiate this phase, the call for immediate action could not be clearer.
Transport Minister Jack Chambers has yet to respond officially, but the growing consensus among local leaders and transport officials underscores a pressing demand for investment. The urgency of this dialogue reflects the wider implications for regional development, sustainability, and accessibility.
Citizens are urged to voice their support for the project, as the outcome will significantly impact the local economy and community connectivity. Observers are keenly watching how the Minister will address these vital funding needs in the coming weeks.
As developments unfold, this project could transform travel in the region, making it a key focus for both local residents and policymakers. Stay tuned for more updates on this critical infrastructure initiative.
