Frankie Dettori, a prominent figure in horse racing, has confirmed his decision to retire from race riding in the United States following the Breeders’ Cup scheduled for Saturday at Del Mar. The announcement marks the second time the 54-year-old jockey has chosen to step back from the sport, having initially planned to retire at the end of the 2023 season in Britain. Instead, Dettori has spent the past two years competing in the United States.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media platform X, Dettori expressed his gratitude for his career, saying, “Following the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday, I will be retiring from race riding in the United States and concluding my career with a few rides in South America, something I’ve always wanted to do.” He went on to acknowledge the support he has received throughout his career, stating, “It has been an honor to compete at the highest level of this sport for over four decades.”

A Career Spanning Over Four Decades

Dettori began his illustrious career in 1986, securing his first victory in Italy before achieving his initial British success the following year. His rapid ascent through the ranks was marked by being crowned champion apprentice in 1989. Over the years, Dettori became a household name, winning the British champion title three times and claiming victory in every British Classic at least twice. Notably, after 14 attempts, he finally won the Derby on Authorized in 2007.

Throughout his career, Dettori has forged connections with numerous legendary horses, including the dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Enable and the champion stayer Stradivarius. His impressive portfolio includes a remarkable 15 winners at the Breeders’ Cup meetings, with his latest victory coming aboard Inspiral in 2023.

Dettori gained widespread fame in 1996 when he made headlines for his “Magnificent Seven” at Ascot, where he won all seven races at the track, each at significant odds. Initially, he intended for his final race to be at the 2023 Champions Day at Ascot. However, after a remarkable season that featured Group One wins with horses like Mostahdaf and Inspiral, Dettori decided to extend his career by relocating to the United States.

A Grand Finale at the Breeders’ Cup

In his farewell to American racing, Dettori will conclude his stint with a ride aboard the Japanese-trained runner Argine in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. His commitment to the sport has continued, as he recently delighted fans by riding King Of Steel to victory in the Champion Stakes during his last British race before moving to California. He quickly made an impact in the U.S., winning the Grade One Santa Anita Handicap aboard Newgate for trainer Bob Baffert.

As Dettori prepares for this final chapter, he reflects on a career that has not only shaped his life but also left a lasting legacy in the world of horse racing. His heartfelt farewell resonates with fans and colleagues alike, as he expresses his deep appreciation for the support that has accompanied him throughout his incredible journey. As he embarks on his final rides in South America, the racing world bids farewell to one of its most beloved figures.
