Leaders Unite at Euronews Summit to Shape EU Enlargement Future

The Euronews Enlargement Summit, scheduled for November 4, 2023, will bring together prominent leaders from the European Union and candidate countries to discuss the future of European integration. Hosted in Brussels, this landmark event represents a significant opportunity for dialogue concerning the expansion of the EU, particularly towards the east and southeast regions.
European Council President António Costa has confirmed his attendance, joining a distinguished group of leaders including the presidents of Moldova and Serbia, Maia Sandu and Aleksandar Vučić, along with prime ministers from the Western Balkans: Edi Rama of Albania, Milojko Spajić of Montenegro, and Hristijan Mickoski of North Macedonia. Also present will be Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement.
This summit is part of a broader initiative by Euronews to elevate the voices of candidate countries at a pivotal moment. The European Commission, led by President Ursula von der Leyen, has recently redefined the enlargement process as a “reunification of Europe,” injecting new life into discussions that hold significant implications for the future of the continent.
The summit aims to provide a platform for leaders to share their perspectives on the enlargement process. For instance, Moldova’s leadership, amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, will highlight their path toward EU membership, while leaders from the Western Balkans will reflect on their long-standing aspirations for integration. Each participant will bring unique insights into the challenges and opportunities their nations face as they navigate the complexities of potential EU membership.
Against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the enlargement discussions have gained urgency. The European Commission views this process as integral to enhancing Europe’s security, economic resilience, and commitment to democratic values. Countries like Ukraine and Moldova have rapidly advanced their applications for EU membership, demonstrating their resolve despite significant challenges. Ukraine, which applied for membership shortly after the invasion in February 2022, achieved candidate status in just four months. Moldova followed suit, receiving its candidate status in March 2022 and is expected to complete negotiations by 2027.
The situation is more complex for Serbia and North Macedonia. Serbia has been engaged in negotiations since 2014 but has seen a decline in public support for EU membership. Comparatively, North Macedonia has faced numerous setbacks, including disputes with neighboring countries that have delayed its accession process.
The summit’s timing aligns with the European Commission’s presentation of its 2025 enlargement package, an essential annual report assessing the progress of candidate nations. A recent Eurobarometer poll indicates that support for EU enlargement is robust, with 56% of EU citizens in favor, particularly among younger demographics.
Euronews’ summit is distinguished by its commitment to fostering direct dialogue between candidate leaders and EU decision-makers. The televised format will allow audiences across Europe to engage with the discussions surrounding enlargement, providing a transparent view of the challenges and aspirations that define this critical juncture in European history.
The summit will be broadcast live across Euronews’ television and digital platforms, including YouTube, from 14:00 to 17:00 CET on November 4. This unprecedented event is positioned to be a defining moment for the future of the EU and its approach to enlargement.
