Urgent Update: Driver Admits Guilt After Fatal Hit-and-Run
UPDATE: An 83-year-old driver has admitted guilt in a tragic hit-and-run case that resulted in the death of Sheila Creedon, a beloved member of her community, in Oranmore, Galway, on January 6, 2023. The driver, Patrick Martin, consumed four pints of lager before striking Creedon as she crossed Main Street, court proceedings revealed.
This shocking incident unfolded just after 5 PM when Creedon, in her late seventies, was returning from a coffee outing with friends. Witnesses reported that Martin left the scene after observing the efforts of bystanders to assist Creedon, who later succumbed to her injuries at University Hospital Galway.
The court heard emotional testimonies from Creedon’s son, Paul Creedon, who described his mother as a “devoted wife, a loving mother, and a cherished community member.” He expressed the family’s devastation, stating that “no words can truly capture the devastation” inflicted by Martin’s actions.
Judge Brian O’Callaghan characterized Martin’s decision to flee the scene as “bereft of any kindness or scrap of common human decency.” Following the incident, Martin failed to assist Creedon and did not report the collision to the Garda Síochana, actions deemed a blatant attempt to evade accountability.
According to Garda evidence, Martin monitored the scene for approximately seven minutes before driving away. CCTV footage confirmed his earlier presence at the Old Brewery pub where he drank four pints, raising serious questions about his ability to drive safely.
Paul Creedon highlighted the profound emotional impact on their family, stating that the loss has created an “empty chair” at family gatherings and left a void in their community. He emphasized that Martin’s delayed admission of guilt felt “hollow” and lacked genuine remorse.
The family expressed gratitude towards those who provided immediate assistance to Sheila Creedon and acknowledged the thorough investigation by local authorities. They continue to seek justice, urging that the sentence reflects the severity of the crime.
The case has been adjourned until November 12, as the court considers the appropriate penalties. As this story develops, the community mourns the loss of a remarkable woman whose life was tragically cut short.
