Pauline Collins, Star of Shirley Valentine, Passes Away at 85
The acclaimed actress Pauline Collins, best known for her role in the film Shirley Valentine, has died at the age of 85. She passed away peacefully in her care home in London, surrounded by family, after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Collins first garnered attention as Sarah Moffet in the beloved British drama Upstairs, Downstairs, where she became a familiar face during the show’s initial two series. Her portrayal of a long-suffering housewife in the one-woman play Shirley Valentine, which debuted in 1988, marked a significant turning point in her career. The play follows a woman’s transformative journey as she travels to Greece and chooses to embrace a new life, ultimately leaving her past behind.
In 1989, Shirley Valentine was adapted into a feature film, with Collins reprising her celebrated role alongside actor Bernard Hill, who portrayed her husband, Joe. Directed by Lewis Gilbert and featuring a screenplay by Willy Russell, the film received widespread acclaim and brought Collins further recognition.
