Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly Skips Connolly Inauguration
Emma Little-Pengelly, the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, has announced her absence from the inauguration of Catherine Connolly, who is set to become Ireland’s next president. The event will take place on November 7, 2023, at Dublin Castle. Little-Pengelly confirmed she received an invitation but cited prior commitments on Remembrance Day as the reason for not attending.
In a statement regarding her decision, Little-Pengelly emphasized the significance of Remembrance Day, stating, “Tuesday marks Remembrance Day, an important day for so many.” She indicated that she would participate in a service and an Act of Remembrance at the Parliament Buildings in Belfast. Following these events, she is scheduled to attend a special reception at Windsor Castle, hosted by Their Majesties The King and Queen, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VJ Day and honoring Second World War veterans.
While Little-Pengelly will not be present at the inauguration, she expressed her well wishes to Connolly, acknowledging the personal honor of assuming the presidency. “I wish Catherine Connolly well as she takes up office, recognizing that this is undoubtedly a significant personal honor for her,” she stated. Little-Pengelly added that she hopes to speak with Connolly in the coming days to congratulate her personally.
The absence of the Deputy First Minister at such a pivotal event highlights the ongoing balance of commitments within Northern Ireland’s political landscape. First Minister Michelle O’Neill, representing the same party as Little-Pengelly, is expected to attend the inauguration, marking a significant moment in Irish politics.
Catherine Connolly’s inauguration is not only a milestone in her political career but also a noteworthy moment for Ireland, as she prepares to take on her new role as president. The event will be closely watched, given its implications for the future of Irish governance and leadership.
