Éanna Hardwicke Calls Cork Premiere of ‘Saipan’ Harder Than Kilimanjaro
UPDATE: Irish actor Éanna Hardwicke revealed that the Irish premiere of his film “Saipan” in Cork was “harder than climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.” This surprising statement came during an appearance on the Late Late Show with Steve Coogan, just hours after the premiere at the Everyman Theatre.
The premiere took place on Thursday night, with a packed audience of 800 Corkonians eagerly awaiting Hardwicke’s portrayal of former Ireland captain Roy Keane. The film, set to be released on New Year’s Day in Ireland, explores the notorious fallout between Keane and manager Mick McCarthy during the tumultuous 2002 World Cup.
Hardwicke, a Cork native, humorously recounted the pressures of showcasing such a significant film in front of a local crowd. “It was terrifying,” he admitted, reflecting on the weight of performing before his hometown audience. “I thought it was a mental idea to do it in Cork,” he added, expressing relief at the film’s warm reception.
During the show, host Patrick Kielty engaged Hardwicke in a light-hearted conversation about his experience. Hardwicke’s comments not only highlighted the challenges of local premieres but also emphasized the personal significance of the event, describing it as a “very special kind of homecoming.”
The buzz around “Saipan” is palpable, with fans eager to see how it captures a pivotal moment in Irish football history. Hardwicke’s performance is anticipated to resonate with audiences, especially those familiar with the infamous showdown that rocked the nation.
As excitement builds leading up to the film’s release, the Cork premiere serves as a poignant reminder of the connection between artists and their communities. The heartfelt response from the audience indicates that “Saipan” is set to make waves not just in cinemas but also in the hearts of viewers across Ireland.
