Mother Fears More Violence After Drogheda Asylum Centre Fire
URGENT UPDATE: A mother rescued from a devastating fire at the Ipas Centre in Drogheda is expressing her deep fears over potential further acts of violence. The fire, which broke out on Halloween night at the facility on George’s Street, has left residents shaken and fearing for their safety.
Witnesses reported seeing CCTV footage of an individual allegedly pouring fuel on the stairs before the flames erupted, prompting the evacuation of up to 28 residents seeking asylum. In the aftermath, two men have been arrested and charged in connection with this alarming incident.
The mother, who spoke to the Irish Examiner, conveyed her terror, stating, “I am very nervous, I am terrified. I just don’t understand it.” She expressed concern for her children, who are currently safe, but admitted to struggling with anxiety and sleeplessness. “I had to go to see the GP today,” she shared, emphasizing the emotional toll this incident has taken on her family.
Following the incident, several individuals were treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda but were later discharged and temporarily relocated to Mosney in Laytown, Co Meath. The mother has lived in Drogheda for many years and is now reconsidering her future there, citing the negative impact a move would have on her children’s schooling.
Local Fine Gael councillor Ejiro O’Hare-Stratton, who is a friend of those affected, described the community’s shock, stating, “I think everyone is shocked by the events that happened.” O’Hare-Stratton added that he is meeting with the centre’s management to address the residents’ fears and concerns: “It’s just a very worrying time now.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the fire, with the community on alert for further developments. Residents are calling for increased safety measures as they process the trauma of this violent act. The emotional impact on families in the area is profound, with many feeling unsafe and unsettled in their homes.
As the situation unfolds, community leaders and local officials are working to ensure that the needs and safety of the residents are prioritized. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for support and solidarity in the face of rising violence against vulnerable populations.
