Western Rail Corridor Reopening Confirmed for Athenry to Claremorris
UPDATE: Minister of State for Transport Sean Canney has just confirmed that the long-awaited reopening of the Western Rail Corridor from Athenry to Claremorris is on track, with funding secured and work expected to commence within the next 18 months. This announcement was made during a meeting of the Western Inter-County Railway Committee held in Galway.
This significant development marks a crucial step towards revitalizing rail transport in the region. Canney announced that the project will be included in the National Development Plan, ensuring it receives the necessary support and resources. Once the Athenry to Claremorris phase is underway, attention will shift to the next phase, which aims to connect Claremorris to Collooney.
In a statement to Galway Bay FM News, Deputy Canney expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I look forward to the project being delivered in the coming years.” The reopening of this rail line promises to enhance connectivity, reduce road congestion, and provide an eco-friendly transport option for residents and visitors.
The impacts of this reopening are poised to be significant. Not only will it improve travel times for commuters, but it will also bolster local economies and tourism. With the restoration of this vital transport link, the Western Rail Corridor is set to become a key player in Ireland’s transport infrastructure revival, addressing both local needs and broader national goals.
As the community eagerly anticipates the start of construction, all eyes will be on the progress of this project. Stay tuned for further updates on timelines and developments as they unfold.
