Muckalee and Danesfort Triumph in Leinster Championships
Muckalee and Danesfort brought significant victories to Kilkenny on a notable day in the Leinster championships, marking a memorable chapter for both clubs. Muckalee clinched the Leinster junior title, becoming the first Kilkenny club to achieve this in over two decades. They secured a narrow victory against St Colmcille’s from Meath, winning with a score of 1-5 to 1-4.
The match showcased a tense battle, with Muckalee maintaining possession throughout, but the outcome remained uncertain as St Colmcille’s continually posed a threat. Muckalee established a solid position by half-time, leading 1-1 to 0-2, thanks to a goal from Ellen Lawlor and a point from Katie Nolan.
In the second half, St Colmcille’s equalized with a goal in the 44th minute, heightening the drama. Yet, a decisive score from Kate Purcell in the final quarter ensured Muckalee’s triumph, echoing the success of Railyard in 2004.
Danesfort Advances with Gritty Performance
On the same day, Danesfort redeemed themselves from a previous disappointing provincial campaign with a strong performance against St Mogue’s from Fethard. They won decisively, with a final score of 1-24 to 2-14 in the AIB Leinster Intermediate Quarter-Final.
Danesfort started strong under the guidance of coach Adrian Burke, but St Mogue’s leveraged a favorable wind to take a half-time lead of 2-7 to 0-11. The turning point came shortly after the break when Fionn Mahony, who had previously contributed as a substitute, made an impactful start, scoring a crucial goal that shifted momentum back to Danesfort.
The North Kilkenny team maintained their advantage, ultimately progressing to the Leinster semi-final with a comfortable seven-point margin. Both clubs demonstrated resilience and skill, marking a significant day for Kilkenny in the Leinster championships.
