Kilkenny Countryside Park Wins Prestigious Green Flag Award
BREAKING NEWS: Kilkenny’s Countryside Park has just been awarded the prestigious Green Flag by An Taisce, marking a significant achievement for the area. This recognition highlights the park’s commitment to environmental excellence and its dedication to becoming a premier outdoor destination.
Located just 5 km north of Kilkenny City Centre, the park spans an impressive 24 acres and features Kilkenny’s first dedicated dog-friendly enclosure. Opened in December 2023, the park offers visitors three themed walking and running trails, alongside amenities such as two ball walls, a bespoke viewing area, and various play and exercise equipment. Unique relaxation spaces with hammocks and loungers provide a refreshing retreat for visitors.
The Green Flag status not only reflects the park’s aesthetic appeal but also signifies the success of its extensive planting and land management plan aimed at promoting biodiversity. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Parks Department of Kilkenny County Council.
Cllr. Mary Hilda Cavanagh, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, stated, “This award acknowledges excellence in the management of our green spaces. Achieving an international Green Flag Award for this park will elevate the appeal of our city and county, contributing to the ‘Outdoor Kilkenny’ brand.” She emphasized the historical transformation of the site, which was previously a municipal landfill.
Frank Stafford, Senior Engineer with the Capital Delivery Office and Parks Department, expressed his enthusiasm: “It is fantastic to see how far we have come in the transformation of this site. Achieving the Green Flag is another milestone in the park’s story.” He credited the local community and elected members for their ongoing support throughout the park’s development.
Since its inception, the park has thrived, hosting the popular Junior Park Run every Sunday morning and becoming a favorite among dog owners and families. “It really has something for everyone, and I would encourage everyone to visit this wonderful free amenity,” Stafford added.
As news of this award spreads, Kilkenny’s Countryside Park is poised to attract even more visitors, reinforcing its position as a vital green space for outdoor enthusiasts. The community is invited to celebrate this achievement and discover the park’s offerings, promoting a healthy lifestyle and connection to nature.
Stay tuned for more updates as Kilkenny continues to enhance its outdoor spaces and solidify its status as a top-tier destination for recreation and biodiversity.
