Europe Dominates First Day of 2025 Zagreb Grand Prix
The 2025 Zagreb Grand Prix commenced on March 1, 2025, showcasing a remarkable display of European talent as five athletes claimed gold medals on the opening day. The event, part of the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Tour, attracted a vibrant crowd at Arena Zagreb, where enthusiastic fans witnessed thrilling matches featuring their judo heroes.
Among the standout performers, Eva Perez Soler secured her first Grand Prix gold medal in the -48 kg category. She triumphed over Laura Espadinha with two decisive yuko scores in the final. The medals were presented by Marius Vizer, President of the IJF, adding significance to the occasion.
An all-French final characterized the -60 kg category, where Enzo Jean faced off against compatriot Romain Valadier Picard. The match was fiercely contested, with a single yuko scored in the final minute ultimately deciding the outcome in favor of Jean. His victory was celebrated with a medal presentation by Vladimir Barta, IJF Head Sport Director.
In the -52 kg category, Distria Krasniqi demonstrated exceptional skill, overpowering all her opponents, including her long-standing rival, Reka Pupp, in the final. With this victory, Krasniqi extended her head-to-head record against Pupp to an impressive 8-1. She received her medal from Mohammed Meridja, IJF Education & Coaching Director.
The -66 kg category saw a captivating contest between David Garcia Torne of Spain and Italy’s Elios Manzi. Garcia Torne employed his unique, unorthodox style to secure a thrilling victory, impressing the audience with his technique. The medals were awarded by Tina Trstenjak, IJF Referee Director, who acknowledged the high level of competition.
In a highly anticipated match, Croatian favorite Ana Viktorija Puljiz faced top seed Marica Perisic in the -57 kg final. Perisic showcased her strength, ultimately winning her third Grand Prix gold medal. The medal presentation was conducted by Dr. Sanda Corak, President of the Croatian Judo Federation, who highlighted the significance of the event for local athletes.
As the first day concluded, the Croatian team displayed strong performances, setting a competitive tone for the remainder of the tournament. Looking ahead, the second day will feature middleweight categories, with several high-profile athletes vying for gold, promising continued excitement for judo fans.
