Thousands Without Power as Orange Rain Warning Hits Three Counties
UPDATE: Thousands of households are plunged into darkness as an orange rain warning remains in effect for Dublin, Wicklow, and Wexford. The warning, issued by Met Éireann, is expected to last until 8 AM on Saturday, November 15, while a wind warning continues until 9 AM for 13 counties.
Torrential rainfall and high winds have wreaked havoc across the east and south of Ireland, leaving significant portions of the population without power. The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) reports that over 2,000 residents in the Abbeyfeale area of Limerick are affected, along with numerous clusters in Wicklow and Meath.
Severe flooding has already impacted parts of eastern Ireland and the Midlands, prompting officials to closely monitor rising water levels throughout the weekend. The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management has emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly in the eastern coastal counties.
Met Éireann meteorologist Liz Walsh urged affected residents to take precautionary measures. “Just be prepared. Clear out your drains and make sure your gutters are clear as well,” she advised, noting that heavy bursts of rain could trigger further flooding.
With the ground already saturated, any additional rainfall is expected to exacerbate existing conditions. Walsh highlighted that the rain is particularly impactful in south Dublin, where flooding risks are heightened.
As the situation develops, emergency management teams are actively engaged in assessing conditions and responding where necessary. Local authorities, including Dublin City Council, are monitoring critical waterways such as the River Dodder and adjusting reservoir levels to mitigate flooding risks.
Travel disruptions are anticipated, and officials advise residents in the affected areas to remain alert and prepared for potential emergencies. As this situation unfolds, keeping informed is crucial for safety and preparedness.
