British low-cost leisure airline Jet2 has unveiled plans to launch its first-ever flights from London Gatwick Airport starting on March 26, 2026. This significant move marks the establishment of a new base at Gatwick, with the airline set to operate 29 holiday destinations across Europe. This expansion makes Jet2 the first major new leisure airline at Gatwick since 2020 and the largest new based airline at the airport this century.

With the introduction of this service, Jet2 will base six aircraft at Gatwick, including five brand new Airbus A321neo aircraft. The airline’s inaugural flight will travel to Tenerife, one of eleven destinations in Spain, followed by the launch of various routes leading into July.

Expanding Travel Options

The Summer 2026 network from Jet2 will encompass popular holiday spots in countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye. In total, the airline will offer eleven destinations in Spain, ten in Greece, two in Italy, and one each in Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, Portugal, and Turkey. Notable high-frequency routes include Faro and Palma de Mallorca, with ten weekly flights each, alongside services to Alicante, Malaga, and Tenerife.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, described the announcement as a “transformational next step” for the airline. He expressed excitement about the opportunity to provide a differentiated, service-led offering from Gatwick, emphasizing the airport’s significance as a leading destination for leisure travel in the UK.

Job Creation and Competitive Landscape

The establishment of the Gatwick base is expected to create over 300 jobs across various roles, including ground handling, operations, flight crew, and administrative positions. This expansion allows Jet2 to position itself against established low-cost carriers at Gatwick, notably easyJet, TUI Airways, and Wizz Air.

As Gatwick’s busiest carrier, easyJet will face increased competition, especially given Jet2’s strength in the package holiday market. With over seven million holiday package passengers served this year, Jet2 claims the title of the UK’s largest package operator, significantly outpacing competitors like easyJet.

The launch of Jet2’s new base at London Gatwick Airport represents a pivotal moment in the airline’s growth strategy, bringing enhanced travel options for holidaymakers and a competitive edge in the bustling leisure travel market.
