Suzy Byrne, daughter of the late Irish broadcaster Gay Byrne, has shared insights into why her father would never have pursued the presidency of Ireland. During a recent interview, she explained that his awareness of public scrutiny surrounding his past statements played a significant role in his decision to avoid such a high-profile political position.

Although Gay Byrne was flattered by suggestions for a presidential run, Suzy believes it was never a true ambition for him. She expressed that, after dedicating much of his life to public service, the idea of entering a presidential campaign seemed daunting. Suzy noted, “He said, ‘you know, I have been on television and radio for so many years, there’s no way they’re not going to be digging up stuff that my whole broadcasting career was based on.’”

The renowned broadcaster, known for his candid style, was aware that his previous remarks could be scrutinized and possibly misinterpreted. Suzy elaborated, quoting her father’s thoughts on the matter: “So, you know, to then ask people to vote for you and all of that kind of being unearthed and twisted and turned. And suddenly you’re answerable to what you said in an interview 12 years ago.”

Reflecting on her father’s decision, she added, “So dad said, ‘Why would I? Why would I put myself into that position?’” For Suzy, the fleeting moment of consideration for the presidency was a compliment but ultimately did not advance any further.

Suzy Byrne recently appeared on The Grief Pod to discuss her father’s legacy, coinciding with the sixth anniversary of his passing and the first anniversary of her mother, Kathleen Watkins. She found solace in the closeness of these anniversaries, recalling a poignant moment from the previous year. “Last year, when mum was in the hospital, and she was nearing her last few days, and we had the radio on, and I remember Marty Whelan played a tune that dad always played on his anniversary,” she stated.

The emotional significance of these memories brings a sense of connection for Suzy, particularly during such difficult times. She continued, “I think it brought us great comfort, especially last year, that she didn’t die on his anniversary, but very close to it as if almost in sync.”

Suzy Byrne has also published her second book, titled PS Gay: More Letters and Memories from The Gay Byrne Show, which is currently available for purchase at Eason for €23.99. The book offers a unique glimpse into her father’s life and career, celebrating his impact on Irish broadcasting and culture.

In reflecting on her father’s legacy and their shared memories, Suzy Byrne continues to honour the contributions Gay Byrne made to Irish society while navigating her own journey of remembrance and grief.
