Urgent Update: Five Young Lives Lost in County Louth Crash
UPDATE: In a tragic incident, five young people have been confirmed dead following a horrific road crash in County Louth, Ireland, just outside Dundalk. The collision occurred around 9 PM on Saturday, October 14, 2023, when a Volkswagen Golf carrying five individuals collided with a Toyota Landcruiser on the Ardee road at Gibstown.
The victims, comprised of three men and two women, were all under the age of 25. Authorities report that three others were injured in the crash, with one person traveling in the Golf and two in the Landcruiser. Fortunately, none of the injuries sustained are life-threatening.
A major investigation is currently underway, and the site of this devastating accident is sealed off as forensic teams conduct thorough examinations. The scene, described as one of the worst in recent memory, remains a focal point of police activity.
Superintendent Charlie Armstrong of Dundalk garda station addressed reporters this morning, commending the first responders for their professionalism despite the challenging weather conditions at the time of the accident.
“The scene was very difficult, in adverse weather conditions, and the professionalism shown by all first responders and the care and respect shown to the five deceased was exemplary,”
Supt Armstrong stated.
He went on to emphasize the profound impact this tragedy will have on the families and communities of Carrickmacross, Dromconrath, and Scotland. “This is a shocking, devastating event for these families, their communities, and the community here in Dundalk,” he added.
Authorities have established an incident room at Dundalk garda station, and a Senior Investigating Officer is leading the inquiry. The local Coroner’s Office and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified, with post-mortem examinations set to occur in the coming days.
An Garda Síochána is calling for witnesses or anyone with camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, who were traveling on the L3168 Ardee Road in Dundalk between 8:30 PM and 9:15 PM on Saturday to come forward. Those with information can contact Dundalk garda station at 042 938 8400.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of five young lives, reminding us of the fragility of life and the far-reaching effects of such tragedies.
