Unprecedented Demand for Food Aid Soars This Christmas Season
UPDATE: An alarming surge in families seeking food assistance this Christmas is sending shockwaves across Ireland. NW Cornerstone, a charity based in Sligo, reports that the number of families requiring support has doubled this year, prompting an urgent call for donations.
As the holiday season approaches, NW Cornerstone has launched its annual Christmas appeal, highlighting the urgent need for food, toiletries, and non-perishable goods. The charity’s chief, Christina McTaggart, stated, “We’ve seen the number of people coming to us for help with food almost double in 2025, which is an unprecedented rise.” This dramatic increase is attributed to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, which has pushed many families into food poverty.
The charity revealed that last year, they supported over 570 households in Sligo, including 167 families during Christmas, providing essential food hampers, vouchers, and toys to more than 200 children. However, this year’s needs are expected to be even greater.
According to recent estimates, around 480,000 people in Ireland are currently experiencing food poverty, a trend that NW Cornerstone believes is being reflected nationwide. “It’s not always visible, but here in Sligo, there are families who simply don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” McTaggart emphasized.
“Christmas is always a stressful time for families, a time when the worry grows about how they’re going to manage,” McTaggart added.
This urgent situation calls for immediate action from the public. NW Cornerstone is appealing to community members to prioritize food donations, stating that every contribution counts in helping families during this critical time. The charity’s Christmas appeal aims to alleviate the distress faced by those struggling to make ends meet.
As families gear up for the festive season, the stark reality of food insecurity looms larger than ever. With many facing the prospect of an empty table, the need for community support has never been more vital. Those wishing to assist can reach out to NW Cornerstone directly or donate to local food banks to help combat this growing crisis.
As the situation develops, it is crucial for communities to stay informed and engaged, ensuring that no family is left to face the holiday season alone. Keep an eye on charity announcements and consider contributing to local food drives to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.
