Pierce Brosnan Considers Return to Bond Franchise as Retired Agent
Pierce Brosnan has suggested he might be open to returning to the James Bond franchise, albeit as a retired agent. The 72-year-old Irish actor, who portrayed the iconic character in four films from 1995 to 2002, clarified that he does not envision reprising the role of an active secret agent. Instead, he expressed interest in participating in a project related to the franchise.
In an interview with British GQ, Brosnan acknowledged the ongoing interest in his connection to Bond. He stated, “Of course, people ask about Bond – ‘would you?’ and whatever – but that’s another man’s job. But the possibilities of working within that film, entertaining… So it’s going to be exciting to see what happens.” When asked specifically about the prospect of playing a retired agent, he noted, “Sometimes you entertain it and sometimes you just move on.”
Brosnan’s thoughts come at a time when the franchise is undergoing significant transitions. The future direction of the Bond series is currently uncertain, following the departure of Daniel Craig after his final appearance in No Time to Die (2021). As fans speculate about who might take on the role next, Brosnan’s comments add another layer to the ongoing conversation surrounding the character and its legacy.
The actor is also focused on other projects, including a sequel to The Thursday Murder Club, based on the popular books by Richard Osman. Additionally, he has started filming the second season of MobLand, a crime drama on Paramount+. Reflecting on his recent work, Brosnan said, “It’s just been a delight for two years of working back to back. In this time and place in age, it allows me to play characters. It allows me to enjoy the process of acting.”
Brosnan portrayed James Bond in GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002). As he embraces his age, he remarked, “There is a definite conscious intention to go forwards because I’m the age I am, and I embrace it. I don’t want to jump out of aeroplanes. Jump on the bus. Jump off the bus.”
Looking ahead, Brosnan will be honored at the GQ Men of the Year event on November 18 in London. His recognition at this prestigious event underscores his enduring impact on the entertainment industry and his multifaceted career.
As the discussions about the future of Bond continue, Brosnan’s openness to a return—even as a retired figure—highlights the character’s lasting appeal and the potential for new narratives within the franchise.
