Urgent: Cork’s Franciscan Well Brewery Faces Closure Early 2024
URGENT UPDATE: The iconic Franciscan Well Brewery in Cork is set to cease production early in 2024, with plans to close its doors permanently. This shocking development comes as Molson Coors announces the discontinuation of several beloved beer brands, including Chieftain IPA and Rebel Red.
Just announced, the brewery, established in 1998 along the scenic banks of the River Lee, will stop brewing its signature beers, impacting 15 employees. These workers have already begun a consultation process regarding their future as the company seeks redeployment opportunities.
Molson Coors cites challenges in the craft beer market and broader economic pressures as key factors in this decision. “It has not been possible to grow the brands to the level needed to sustain the brewery as part of our UK and Ireland production network,” the company stated. This closure marks a significant moment in Cork’s brewing history, as the Franciscan Well was a pioneer in the local craft beer scene.
Despite a brand refresh in 2022 and new product launches, including the Well Hazy and Docklands Series, the brewery has struggled to maintain viability. The company expressed deep regret over the decision, acknowledging the brewery’s “special place” in the hearts of many Cork residents. “We are open to conversations with parties interested in the site or the brands,” Molson Coors added.
The Franciscan Well pub, a separate entity, will continue to operate as normal, providing a glimmer of hope for local beer enthusiasts. However, the loss of the brewery will be felt deeply within the community.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Molson Coors and any potential negotiations regarding the future of the brewery and its brands. The local craft beer community is bracing for the impact of this closure, with many hoping for a possible buyer to step in and preserve this cherished Cork institution.
