Limerick Council Plans Civic Reception for Hurling Captain Declan Hannon
A motion to honour Declan Hannon, the five-time All-Ireland winning senior hurling captain, is set to be proposed at a Limerick Council meeting. After dedicating 15 years to representing Limerick on the inter-county stage, Hannon recently announced his retirement from competitive hurling, prompting calls for recognition of his significant contributions to the sport.
Bridie Collins, a councillor representing Fianna Fáil, has suggested that Limerick City and County Council host a civic reception to celebrate Hannon’s achievements at both club and county levels. Collins expressed her belief that Hannon’s remarkable career warrants such an honour, particularly given his status as a three-time All-Star.
During the Adare-Rathkeale District meeting this month, Collins was informed by council management that a reception could be arranged at County Hall in Dooradoyle. However, it would need to involve all 40 elected members of the local authority to ensure comprehensive representation.
Support from Fellow Councillors
Vincent Murray, Director of Adare-Rathkeale District, proposed the idea of hosting a joint reception for both the district and the full council. His suggestion reflects a collaborative approach to honouring Hannon, who has become a celebrated figure in Limerick sports history.
Councillor Adam Teskey of Fine Gael emphasized Hannon’s exceptional contributions, stating it is only fitting to acknowledge “the magnificent hurling great” with a mayoral reception. Teskey highlighted Hannon’s leadership in guiding the team to historic victories, underscoring the impact of his tenure on the sport in Limerick.
Additionally, Councillor Stephen Keary supported the idea of a full council reception, suggesting that this would prevent the local office from bearing the financial burden. He noted, “These things can eat up money,” highlighting the need for careful fiscal management in organizing such events.
The proposed civic reception for Declan Hannon not only serves to celebrate his sporting achievements but also reflects a broader appreciation for the role of sports in community identity. If approved, the event promises to be a significant gathering for both fans and officials, marking a pivotal moment in Limerick’s hurling legacy.
As preparations advance, the council will discuss the logistics and potential dates for the reception, ensuring that Hannon receives the recognition he rightfully deserves for his contributions to hurling and the local community.
