The first-ever D-8 Media Forum took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking a significant step in enhancing media collaboration among member states of the Developing-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation (D-8). The event concluded on Friday as part of the D-8 Week, showcasing Azerbaijan’s commitment to deepening its role within the group since becoming a full member in March 2025.

The D-8, which comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan, serves as a platform for Muslim-majority developing nations to engage in economic discussions. Although smaller than other international groups like the G20, the D-8 aims to amplify the voices of its members in global economic dialogue. Azerbaijan’s recent membership is the first expansion of the organization in nearly three decades.

Establishing a Media Excellence Centre

During the forum, approximately 150 delegates attended, including 71 foreign representatives from member states and the D-8 Secretariat. The forum’s key outcomes included the proposal to create a Media Excellence Centre, which aims to enhance collaboration among media institutions across member countries. In an address presented by Presidential aide Hikmat Hajiyev, President Ilham Aliyev emphasized the importance of building a credible and impartial information space.

D-8 Secretary General Isiaka Abdulqadir Imam highlighted that the proposed Media Excellence Centre would strengthen the collective voice of the D-8 countries in the global information landscape. He also suggested forming a Broadcasting Association for member states, which would facilitate the exchange of programs and news items while promoting cultural understanding among the D-8 nations.

Kamaludin, CEO of Malaysia’s National News Agency BERNAMA, addressed concerns regarding misinformation in her country. In an interview with Euronews, she stated that the Malaysian government is implementing stricter media regulations to combat the spread of false information. “The number of cases involving scams and cyberbullying is increasing,” she noted, affirming that the government does not intend to control the media but rather to ensure a safer environment for communication.

The Broader Impact of D-8 Expansion

The D-8 countries together represent over one billion people and include several rapidly growing economies. Azerbaijan’s accession signifies a new era for the organization, allowing it to expand its influence and reach. The initiatives discussed during the forum, including the Media Excellence Centre and the Broadcasting Association, are expected to enhance cooperation and address shared challenges in the media landscape.

As the D-8 moves forward, the collaboration among member states aims to create a resilient information space. The outcomes from the inaugural Media Forum are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of media cooperation within this coalition of developing nations.
