Galway RNLI Honors Trio with Long Service Awards Amid Celebrations
UPDATE: Three dedicated volunteers from Galway RNLI were honored with Long Service Awards during a special celebration marking 30 years of lifesaving service at the Galway Lifeboat Station. The ceremony, which took place earlier today, recognized the unwavering commitment of Les Perry, Barry Heskin, and Shane Folan to their community.
The awards were presented at the One Crew Celebration by Anna Classon, RNLI Head of Region for Ireland, who commended the trio for their exceptional service. Paul Carey, Acting Lifeboat Operations Manager, delivered heartfelt tributes highlighting the remarkable contributions of each awardee.
Les Perry received a 20-year service medal for his invaluable work as a Volunteer Treasurer for the Fundraising Committee. Perry, who grew up in Wexford, was inspired to volunteer after hearing stories of the heroic efforts of RNLI crews. “Les has been a dedicated Volunteer Treasurer for 20 years, tirelessly managing donations and outreach across Galway,” Carey stated.
Barry Heskin and Shane Folan were both honored with 30-year service medals, a testament to their long-standing commitment. Heskin has responded to countless rescues, often in perilous conditions. He has also risen through the ranks to become Helm and Launch Authority, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of rescue operations.
“Barry has led crews at sea, providing decisive leadership to guarantee prompt and safe launches whenever needed,” Carey noted.
Folan holds the unique distinction of being the first officially enrolled volunteer at Galway Lifeboat Station. Since his enrollment on May 28, 1995, he has excelled in various roles, gaining immense respect within the RNLI community. “Shane not only serves as a vital crew member but also plays a key role in local maritime safety initiatives,” Carey added.
The event brought together former and current members of the Galway Lifeboat Station, creating a sense of unity and celebration. The recognition of these veterans highlights the critical role volunteers play in maritime safety and community service.
As Galway RNLI looks ahead, the organization continues to seek passionate individuals willing to join their lifeboat crew. The commitment of volunteers like Perry, Heskin, and Folan sets a powerful example for others in the community.
