A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his brother, Paudie O’Connor, following a family funeral in Co Kerry. The conviction was handed down after a jury found Fergus O’Connor guilty, rejecting his claims of self-defence. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on June 28, 2024, at their mother’s home in Scartaglen, Castleisland.

During the sentencing hearing at the Central Criminal Court, the prosecution described the circumstances of the murder as “brutal and frightening.” Fergus O’Connor had numerous grievances against his 42-year-old brother, including disputes over money, land, and relationships with women. Despite his defence team’s extensive arguments regarding self-defence, Ms Justice Melanie Greally stated that the jury had thoroughly considered and ultimately rejected this claim.

The court was informed that Paudie O’Connor died from a single stab wound measuring 17 cm, which penetrated crucial organs including the heart, diaphragm, and liver. Earlier that day, both brothers had attended their cousin’s funeral and consumed alcohol at various pubs in the area. A toxicology report indicated that Paudie’s blood alcohol level was significantly above the legal limit for driving, suggesting he was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Fergus O’Connor expressed dissatisfaction with the jury’s verdict, maintaining that he acted in self-defence. He detailed to law enforcement his belief that his brother had disrespected him by attempting to use his identification for personal gain and by making derogatory remarks regarding women he had been associated with.

In her victim impact statement, Paudie O’Connor’s partner of nine years, Liz O’Donovan, conveyed the profound impact of the tragedy on her and their children. She described Paudie as someone who would be remembered for his “warmth, humour, and generous heart,” emphasizing that no prison sentence could alleviate the pain of his loss.

Ms Justice Greally noted the community’s efforts during the incident, commending neighbors who attempted to save Paudie’s life amid what she described as “very traumatizing circumstances.” She extended her condolences to those left grieving by Paudie’s death, including his teenage son who is now without a father.

With a history of 15 previous convictions, primarily related to road traffic offenses, including three for drink-driving, Fergus O’Connor now faces the mandatory term of life imprisonment for his brother’s murder. The sentence was backdated to June 28, 2024, when the crime was committed, leaving a significant void in the lives of those who loved Paudie O’Connor.
