Driver Pleads Guilty in Shocking Liverpool Parade Crash
UPDATE: In a dramatic turn of events, Paul Doyle, 54, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges linked to the horrific incident that left over 130 people injured during the Liverpool FC victory parade on May 26, 2025. The plea was announced during his trial at Liverpool Crown Court, where the courtroom was filled with palpable tension as Doyle sobbed while changing his plea just one day after the trial began.
Doyle admitted to charges of dangeous driving, affray, and 17 counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. He also faces nine counts of causing GBH with intent and three counts of wounding with intent. This shocking revelation comes after a jury was sworn in on Tuesday, with the prosecution set to begin its case the following day.
The court heard how Doyle drove his Ford Galaxy Titanium into a crowd on Water Street shortly after 6 PM, as thousands gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s Premier League title win. The implications of his reckless actions are profound, affecting victims ranging in age from six months to 77 years old. Among the victims is baby Teddy Eveson, who was thrown approximately 15 feet from his pram upon impact.
Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC remarked, “It is inevitable there will be a custodial sentence of some length.” Doyle is scheduled to return for a two-day sentencing hearing on December 15, where the full extent of his actions will be addressed.
Witness accounts describe a scene of chaos as Doyle’s vehicle collided with over 100 people, leading to injuries that have had lasting physical and psychological effects on many. Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald from Merseyside Police stated, “It is hard to forget the shocking scenes from that day. What should have been a day of celebration for the city turned into a distressing and frightening experience.”
The incident occurred during a parade that began at 2:30 PM and traveled approximately 15 kilometers before reaching the city center. Eyewitnesses reported that Doyle’s reckless driving followed a moment when an ambulance was allowed onto Water Street after a temporary roadblock was lifted, leading to an unexpected and tragic turn of events.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Sarah Hammond emphasized the gravity of Doyle’s actions, stating, “Driving a vehicle into a crowd is an act of calculated violence. This was not a momentary lapse by Paul Doyle — it was a choice he made that day.” The prosecution also revealed dashcam footage showing Doyle’s escalating agitation as he approached the crowd, ultimately deciding to force his way through rather than wait.
As the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event, Doyle’s guilty plea marks a significant step in the legal proceedings. The impact of this incident is far-reaching, highlighting the urgent need for discussions on public safety during large gatherings.
As this story develops, readers are encouraged to stay informed on the upcoming sentencing and its implications for the victims and the Liverpool community.
