Kilkenny Mourns Rev Ian Coulter: Funeral Held Today at 2 PM

UPDATE: The community of Kilkenny is in mourning today as the funeral for Rev Ian Coulter takes place at 2 PM in St Canice’s Cathedral. Ian’s sudden passing last Saturday has left friends and colleagues in shock and deep sadness.

Originally from Offaly, Ian made Kilkenny his home, dedicating his life to its communities through unwavering friendship and support. His commitment to social justice was evident in his extensive involvement with local organizations, including the Citizens Information Board and the Good Shepherd Centre. Ian’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief from those he touched throughout his more than 26 years of service as a priest.

The funeral service will be attended by numerous community members, reflecting Ian’s impact. As a former president of the Rotary Club of Kilkenny, he organized the annual Christmas Eve Remembrance Service, fostering a spirit of togetherness. Current club president, Sian Moloughney, highlighted Ian’s vibrant personality, describing him as “full of life, cheerful, supportive, and great company.”

Ian was not just a leader; he was a devoted family man, married to Daphne and a proud father to Rian, Ailbhe, and the late Eavan. His family recalls how he officiated at Ailbhe’s wedding last summer, exemplifying his roles both as a father and a canon.

The Diocese of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory noted Ian as a “conscientious priest and caring pastor,” while Noel Sherry, CEO of the Good Shepherd Centre, praised Ian’s steadfast dedication to helping those experiencing homelessness. Ian’s legacy includes founding Tar Isteach Housing, which continues to provide essential housing support to vulnerable individuals.

As the community gathers to say their final goodbyes, the funeral service promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a man whose generosity and spirit will be deeply missed. Following the service, Ian will be interred in St Kieran’s Cemetery.
