Experts Gather at ICO Winter Meeting to Discuss Neuro-Ophthalmology
The Irish College of Ophthalmologists (ICO) hosted its Winter Meeting on November 21, 2025, at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’s Albert Theatre in Dublin. The event featured a panel of esteemed experts who presented on the subspecialty of Neuro-Ophthalmology, highlighting advancements and challenges within the field.
Among the presenters were Dr Patrick Nicholson, a Consultant Neurointerventional Radiologist at Beaumont Hospital and Beacon Hospital, and Ms Áine Ní Mhealóid and Ms Lisa McAnena, both Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons at major hospitals in Dublin. They were joined by Mr Gerry Fahy, President of the ICO, who opened the session, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in enhancing patient care.
Keynote Lecture on Glaucoma Management
The afternoon concluded with the Annual Montgomery Lecture, delivered by Professor Anthony King, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust. Titled “Journey of an Accidental Academic”, his lecture focused on the clinical management of glaucoma, particularly advanced cases, and the significance of precise definitions in reporting outcomes of glaucoma trials.
During his presentation, Professor King shared insights from his career, discussing the transition from novice researcher to Chief Investigator of the NIHR funded Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma Study (TAGS). He encouraged young ophthalmologists to pursue research, detailing the realities and rewards of engaging in clinical studies.
Professor King’s experience includes serving as a past President of the UK and Eire Glaucoma Society, where he played a pivotal role in developing a national ophthalmic database for trabeculectomy, a surgical procedure aimed at reducing intraocular pressure.
A Gathering of Leading Experts
The Winter Meeting featured additional speakers from both Ireland and the United Kingdom, including Miss Ruchika Batra, a Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and Dr Tasanee Braithwaite, a Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in Neuro-Ophthalmology and Uveitis at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Their contributions enriched the discussions surrounding the evolving landscape of ophthalmology.
Networking opportunities were abundant, allowing attendees to engage with peers and share experiences. Among the notable participants were Dr Sarah Powell, Dr Alison Greene, and Dr Brian Woods, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the event.
The ICO Winter Meeting not only showcased the latest advancements in ophthalmology but also underscored the importance of ongoing education and research in improving patient outcomes. As the field continues to evolve, gatherings like this remain essential in fostering knowledge exchange and professional development.
