Kilkenny Urges New Public Transport Solutions NOW for Rural Areas
URGENT UPDATE: Kilkenny officials are pushing for immediate public transport improvements to better serve rural communities. During a recent session of the Kilkenny City Municipal District, Cllr Sean Ó hArgain stressed the necessity of a “park and stride” system. “We need to move ahead as quickly as possible,” he declared, highlighting the importance of direct bus routes connecting rural residents to the city.
This initiative aims to enhance accessibility for individuals commuting from surrounding areas, particularly around the Waterford Road. Cllr Ó hArgain emphasized that many residents are coming into Kilkenny from rural locations and need reliable options to walk, cycle, or connect with public transport seamlessly.
In addition to the park and stride concept, Cllr Ó hArgain proposed establishing a bus stop on High Street to assist older community members who may struggle to reach the Market Yard. This move is part of a broader strategy to create a more inclusive public transport network in Kilkenny.
In response to these pressing needs, Stan Cullen, Senior Roads Engineer with Kilkenny County Council, confirmed that these enhancements are set to be implemented under the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). This plan aims to deliver sustainable and effective transport solutions in the region.
These developments are crucial for enhancing mobility for all Kilkenny residents, particularly for those who rely heavily on public transport. The community awaits further details on the rollout of these measures, which promise to improve daily commuting experiences and foster a more connected city.
