Family of Four Likely Poisoned by Pesticide Gas in Istanbul Hotel
A Turkish-German family of four died while on holiday in Istanbul, likely due to poisoning from pesticide gas emitted in their hotel room. The Bocek family, who had traveled from Germany, experienced severe illness shortly after arriving at their hotel in the Fatih district on November 12, 2023. A preliminary post-mortem examination, as reported by Turkey’s state-run news agency, indicated the presence of phosphine gas, a toxic insecticide.
After falling ill, the family sought medical treatment and initially visited a hospital by taxi. They returned to the hotel, but their health deteriorated, leading to another hospital visit by ambulance. Tragically, the family’s two young children, Kadir Muhammet, aged six, and Masal, aged three, succumbed to their illnesses on the same day. Their mother, Cigdem, passed away on November 14, followed by their father, Servet, on November 17.
Investigation and Health Concerns
The deaths of the Bocek family have raised serious concerns regarding hotel safety standards in Turkey. Following the incident, authorities launched a thorough investigation, resulting in the arrest of 11 individuals connected to the hotel. The establishment has since been closed as officials examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The preliminary report submitted to the prosecutor’s office revealed alarming findings. Swab samples taken from various areas within the hotel room, as well as towels and masks, tested positive for phosphine gas. Authorities confirmed that the family was not poisoned by food, dispelling earlier speculations that food consumed during their sightseeing in Istanbul could have been the cause.
Additionally, two other tourists staying at the hotel reported similar symptoms of nausea and vomiting, prompting them to seek medical attention. These incidents have intensified calls for stricter regulations and oversight in the hospitality sector to ensure guest safety.
As investigations continue, the Turkish government faces pressure to improve safety protocols in hotels, particularly regarding the use of chemicals for pest control. The tragic loss of the Bocek family serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers that can arise in seemingly safe environments.
