Councillors in the Castlecomer Municipal District have expressed strong disapproval over the conduct of certain contractors engaged by Kilkenny County Council. The issue was brought to light by Cllr Michael McCarthy during a monthly meeting in November 2023, where he highlighted significant public dissatisfaction in the Lisdowney area. Residents have faced serious disruptions due to ongoing ESB Grid Connection works, which have affected access to their homes and local amenities.

Cllr McCarthy raised “serious concerns over the quality of work,” stating, “people have been prevented from gaining access to their own private homes.” He emphasized that the disruptions, coupled with a lack of communication from the contractors, have created considerable inconvenience for local residents. “At times when excavation work took place, people had no access for vehicles into their homes for days on end,” he added, underscoring the impact on daily life.

The councillor further criticized the contractors for what he termed “disregard for people going about their daily business,” declaring that the residents of the area deserve better. He proposed that no further licenses for contractor work be issued until the local authority can ensure an improvement in the quality of future projects.

Cllr McCarthy’s sentiments resonated with his colleagues. Cllr Michael Delaney noted that communication from contractors has been “completely lacking,” while Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh described the situation as “appalling.” Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick took a more direct approach, accusing some contractors of performing a “shoddy” job and suggesting the creation of a “naughty list” to hold them accountable.

In response to the growing frustration, a spokesperson for Kilkenny County Council confirmed that they have engaged in discussions with the contractors involved. The council emphasized the importance of improving communication moving forward, acknowledging the feedback from councillors and residents alike.

As the situation unfolds, it remains critical for contractors to address the concerns raised by local officials and residents. The council’s commitment to ensuring a higher standard of work and communication will be essential in restoring confidence within the community.
