Heavyweights Shine on Final Day of Abu Dhabi Grand Slam
The final day of the 2025 Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi showcased an impressive display of talent, particularly in the heavyweight categories. The event concluded with standout performances from judokas such as Lasha Bekauri, Anna-Monta Olek, and Arman Adamian, each capturing gold medals in their respective weight classes.
In the -90kg category, two-time Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri reaffirmed his dominance by defeating promising Moldovan judoka Latisev in the final. Bekauri’s remarkable skills made it difficult for his opponents throughout the competition, culminating in a victory that solidified his status at the top of the judo world. The medals were presented by Mr. Naser Al Tamimi, General Treasurer of the International Judo Federation (IJF).
The -78kg final featured a rematch between Anna-Monta Olek and reigning world and Olympic champion Alice Bellandi. Olek emerged victorious this time, showcasing her exceptional groundwork skills. This victory not only avenged her previous defeat but also reinforced her position among the elite in her category. The gold medal was awarded by Dr. Lisa Allan, IJF Secretary General.
In the -100kg final, former world champion Arman Adamian demonstrated resilience after falling behind early against teammate Bifov. Adamian turned the tide with two scores, ultimately securing his first gold medal in two years. This victory represents a significant comeback for one of the most formidable throwers in the sport. His medal was presented by Mr. Marius Vizer, President of the IJF.
The +78kg category saw Miki Mukonoki execute a textbook uchi-mata against Xinran Niu, overcoming a noticeable size disadvantage. The elegant throw displayed the essence of judo principles and earned Mukonoki a well-deserved gold medal. The awards were presented by Mr. Simon Benhamou, CEO of CBH Bank.
In the final match of the day, Gonchigsuren Batkhuyag faced off against Olympic medallist Tamerlan Bashayev in the +100kg category. Batkhuyag maintained a yuko lead throughout the match, ultimately clinching the last gold medal of the tournament. The medals were awarded by Mr. Obaid Al Anzi, IJF Vice President.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam 2025 concluded after three exhilarating days of competition, showcasing the best in judo. The event not only highlighted the skill and determination of the athletes but also served as a platform for the sport’s continued growth and popularity worldwide. With heavyweights making their mark, the future of judo looks promising as the athletes prepare for upcoming international challenges.
