Riverbank Centre in Dublin Offers Lifeline for Vulnerable People
The Riverbank Centre, operated by Merchants Quay Ireland in Dublin, is a vital resource for those experiencing homelessness, especially during the colder months. On a rainy morning, the centre buzzes with activity as individuals from various backgrounds seek warmth, meals, and support. With services ranging from hot showers to medical assistance, it plays a crucial role in the local community.
David Newell, a project worker at the Riverbank Centre, has been part of the team for over three years. He highlights the centre’s significance by noting that in 2024, it provided a staggering 81,878 meals and is on track to serve even more in 2025. Newell describes a typical day where he might oversee the bathroom facilities, assist with crisis contacts, or manage the needle exchange program.
The centre’s showers are a particular point of emphasis for Newell. “Having a warm place to go is huge,” he explained. “Even in summer, feeling fresh and clean can improve your mental health.” In 2024, the Riverbank Centre supported more than 14,086 clients and facilitated 4,027 showers, demonstrating the increasing necessity for such facilities. Notably, 887 clients were over 55, highlighting a growing demographic facing homelessness.
As temperatures drop, the demand for the services offered by the Riverbank Centre intensifies. “In winter, it’s not just about finding a place to sit; it’s about finding warmth,” Newell remarked. The centre not only provides meals and showers but also serves as a medically supervised injecting facility, promoting safety among individuals who use drugs. “We monitor for overdoses and provide clean equipment,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of harm reduction.
Clients have access to a range of health services, including nursing care, dental support, and mental health assistance. Building trust and rapport with clients is central to Newell’s approach. “When people walk through the door and feel recognized, it changes the experience,” he noted. He believes that fostering relationships allows staff to better understand and support the diverse needs of individuals coming through the centre.
Newell, originally from Denver, United States, moved to Ireland to study. His commitment to supporting vulnerable populations is evident in his work. One particular case exemplifies the centre’s impact: a man in his mid-40s who had lived in a tent for two years after losing access to his family home. Through the Riverbank Centre, he received assistance navigating the housing system and was recently placed in emergency accommodation.
The atmosphere at the Riverbank Centre balances care with structure, ensuring that clients are fed while maintaining their dignity. In the shower facilities, individuals can find privacy, and health professionals address a wide array of needs, from addiction support to general health issues. The dual diagnosis team also helps clients manage co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges.
“There’s no single story for the people who come here,” Newell explained. “Some need a short-term leg up, while others face long-term challenges.” Despite the hardships faced by many, moments of kindness and community shine through. Newell recalls instances of individuals sharing their limited resources, demonstrating solidarity even in difficult circumstances.
He emphasizes the importance of human connection in his role. “People often feel invisible, especially during festive seasons when the contrast is stark,” he remarked. “I enjoy getting to know our clients and letting them know we are here for them.”
The Riverbank Centre continues to be a beacon of hope for many in Dublin. With its dedicated staff and comprehensive services, it addresses not just immediate needs but also fosters a sense of community and belonging among some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
