UPDATE: Winter officially begins today, December 1, 2023, in Ireland, but residents should brace for an unseasonably warm start. Meteorologist Alan O’Reilly, known for his insights on the popular @CarlowWeather account, confirms that snow is not in the forecast for at least the next ten days.

In a recent post, O’Reilly stated, “First day of winter today and it’s a mild start with no sign of any real significant cold or snow for at least next 10 days.” As a result, the chances of building a snowman this season remain unlikely for the immediate future.

Unsettled weather conditions are expected to dominate the early days of December, with low pressure leading to widespread rain across much of the country. Today, rain will primarily affect the south and east, while the west and north may experience drier conditions, albeit with isolated showers.

Temperatures today will range from 7C to 11C, but dip to lows of -1C overnight, introducing the possibility of frost. As we move into tomorrow, a bright and breezy day awaits, accompanied by sunny spells and some showers, particularly in the west. Forecasts predict temperatures will remain cool, between 5C and 10C.

Looking ahead, Wednesday’s weather will mirror today’s, with scattered showers affecting the western Atlantic counties while the east enjoys sporadic sunshine. However, clouds will roll in by afternoon, bringing rain and drizzle.

According to the latest report from Met Eireann, temperatures will continue to be mild for this time of year, maintaining a range of 7C to 11C.

As winter officially kicks off, the lack of traditional winter weather may leave many feeling disappointed. Stay tuned for further updates on Ireland’s weather as this unseasonably warm pattern develops.
