Mother’s Skin Change Reveals Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis
A 38-year-old mother from Glasgow, Scotland, discovered that what she believed to be a harmless bronzed complexion from fake tan was actually a sign of pancreatic cancer. Debra MacCuaig initially dismissed a persistent itch and increased skin pigmentation, attributing them to her use of cosmetic products. However, a series of alarming symptoms led to a life-changing diagnosis.
Debra began experiencing symptoms in October 2018, including an intense itch that she thought could result from a new detergent or moisturizer. At that time, she also noticed her skin appearing unusually tanned, a change she attributed to frequent social events where she applied fake tan. Yet, the situation escalated when her husband pointed out that her eyes appeared yellow, prompting concerns over jaundice.
This prompted Debra to seek medical advice. Blood tests revealed alarmingly high levels of bilirubin, indicating potential liver or bile duct issues. After further investigations, including ultrasounds and a CT scan, doctors detected a blockage in her bile duct. On December 11, 2018, she underwent a Whipple’s procedure, a significant surgery that involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, part of the duodenum, the gallbladder, and a section of the bile duct.
During this operation, surgeons found and removed a tumor located at the head of her pancreas. Following six months of chemotherapy, Debra received confirmation that there was no further evidence of the disease. She expressed relief but was soon faced with further tragedy.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Debra’s mother, Pam Grindall, was diagnosed with the same type of cancer. Debra recounted her mother’s experience, which mirrored her own. Pam completed her chemotherapy in January 2024 but faced a devastating setback when scans revealed that the cancer had returned, spreading to her spine and lungs. Debra was pregnant at the time, adding to her emotional burden.
Debra shared her anguish: “You kind of feel this survivor’s guilt. I was angry and couldn’t believe the same kind of cancer had struck our family.” Tragically, Pam passed away in May 2023, nearly five years after Debra’s diagnosis.
Now, Debra advocates for awareness regarding symptoms of pancreatic cancer. She urges others to “always trust your gut” when they notice changes in their bodies. Her journey underscores the importance of seeking medical attention promptly, as early detection can make a significant difference in outcomes.
Debra’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of health and the critical importance of listening to one’s body.
