Donegal County Council Honors Legacy of Former Manager Michael McLoone

Donegal County Council has paid tribute to former County Manager Michael McLoone, who passed away recently. Mr. McLoone served in this leadership role from 1994 until his retirement in 2010, leaving a significant mark on the local government and community.

A Legacy of Transformation

A spokesperson for the council highlighted Mr. McLoone’s dedication and passion, noting his lasting impact on the county. “While many important capital projects were delivered during his tenure, he will most notably be remembered for a remarkable transformation in local government in the county with the decentralisation of offices,” the spokesperson stated.

Upon his retirement in 2010, Mr. McLoone reflected on his time with Donegal County Council as the most “challenging and rewarding of his career.” His leadership contributed significantly to the development of public service centres throughout the county, which effectively brought democratic processes closer to local communities.

Condolences and Remembrances

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr. Paul Canning, expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the council and the people of Donegal. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Michael’s wife, Imelda, his sons, Michael, David, and Philip, daughter Caroline, and the extended McLoone family at this difficult time,” he said.

Cllr. Canning emphasized Mr. McLoone’s significant contributions, stating, “The decentralisation of offices resulted in a network of public service centres across the county, bringing democracy into the heart of local communities.” His efforts have been remembered as pivotal in enhancing local governance.

John G. McLaughlin, Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, shared personal reflections on working alongside Mr. McLoone. “I worked under the leadership of Michael on the Senior Management Team for a period of almost 10 years. I recall his drive and determination for change, all of which resulted in the better delivery of services to the citizens of our county,” he noted. “He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.
