Students Dive into John Hume’s Legacy at EU Programme in Derry
UPDATE: Schools across Donegal and Derry are currently participating in a transformative event focused on the legacy of John Hume, as part of the European Parliament Ambassador Schools programme. This significant three-day initiative, underway at the Guildhall in Derry, is aimed at educating students on European parliamentary democracy and civic engagement.
The event, which began today, December 2, 2025, features a series of workshops tackling critical topics such as disinformation, democratic participation, and peacebuilding. Students from various institutions, including Errigal College in Letterkenny and St. Columba’s College in Stranorlar, are actively engaged in student-led presentations and guided tours.
The theme for this year’s programme is “Peacebuilding and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Legacy of John Hume.” This focus highlights Hume’s pivotal role in fostering peace during a turbulent time in the region’s history.
Stephen Clark, Director of the European Parliament Liaison Offices, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting it is the first time the programme has been held on the island of Ireland. “This is a landmark moment for students in Northern Ireland to explore their democratic rights and responsibilities,” Clark stated.
Participants are not only attending workshops but are also involved in cultural activities and a youth panel discussion featuring experts and political figures. This engagement allows students to directly connect with the ideals that Hume championed throughout his career.
The initiative has garnered significant attention, underscoring the urgent need for young people to understand the complexities of democracy and peacebuilding in their communities. As the event unfolds, students are poised to make impactful contributions to ongoing discussions surrounding these crucial issues.
In the coming days, attendees will continue to explore Hume’s legacy and its relevance to current societal challenges. This unique opportunity is expected to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
Stay tuned for more updates as this important event progresses.
