Zelensky in Dublin: €100M Aid Announced Amid Historic Visit
UPDATE: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently in Dublin for a historic visit, marking the first time a Ukrainian president has officially visited Ireland. During his arrival, President Catherine Connolly welcomed him with a red carpet ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin, as the Irish Government announced a substantial €100 million in non-lethal military aid to Ukraine.
This new funding raises Ireland’s total non-lethal military support to Ukraine to €200 million for 2023. This aid is part of a critical partnership between Ireland and Ukraine, set to be formalized by Zelensky and Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin on Tuesday afternoon. The partnership builds on a previous agreement signed in Kyiv last year, emphasizing Ireland’s commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.
The announcement comes as Zelensky’s visit is particularly timely, following his recent discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris regarding efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. Zelensky’s agenda in Dublin includes a bilateral meeting with Martin at Government Buildings, where he will receive military honors.
Following the meeting, Zelensky is scheduled to address Irish parliamentarians at Leinster House, an event that underscores the significance of this diplomatic engagement. The discussions are expected to outline Ireland’s immediate commitments to Ukraine, including a dedicated €25 million for restoring and securing Ukrainian energy infrastructure, vital for ensuring stability in the region.
The Ireland-Ukraine Economic Forum will also be inaugurated during Zelensky’s visit, attended by key Irish officials including Tánaiste Simon Harris and Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee. The forum aims to strengthen economic ties and support Ukraine’s journey towards EU accession.
Prime Minister Martin stated he looks forward to reaffirming Ireland’s “unswerving commitment” to the Ukrainian people, emphasizing that Zelensky’s visit occurs at a “critical time” for Ukraine. Martin praised Zelensky’s “immense bravery” and the resilience of the Ukrainian population, noting their struggles and sacrifices in the face of adversity.
In April 2022, Zelensky made a historic address to the Irish Government via video link, highlighting Ireland’s support in the wake of Russia’s aggression. His current visit further solidifies the bond between the two nations as they navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict.
As this story develops, all eyes are on Dublin as Zelensky and Irish leaders mark a pivotal moment in international solidarity with Ukraine. The outcomes of these discussions could play a crucial role in shaping future aid and support as Ukraine continues to face significant challenges.
Stay tuned for more updates on Zelensky’s visit and the evolving situation in Ukraine.
