Urgent Update: Only 13% of Donegal Dumps Submitted for EPA Certification

UPDATE: Only 13% of historic dumps in Donegal have been submitted for certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), raising urgent concerns about environmental safety. This alarming statistic comes from a recent report by Journal Investigates, which reveals that out of 23 historic dumps, only 3 sites have undergone the necessary certification process.

This situation is particularly pressing as the certification is crucial to mitigate the risk of pollution to local ecosystems and waterways. The report highlights that several of these sites have been classified as either high or moderate risk. Specifically, the old Dungloe Town Dump has been designated as a high-risk site, while nine other locations—including Cloughfinn, Ramelton, Corkey, Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Carrick, Carndonagh, Dunkineely, and Cruckakeehan—are deemed to carry moderate risk.

In an interview with Greg Hughes on today’s Nine til Noon Show, report author Conor O’Carroll expressed serious concerns about the lack of action regarding these hazardous sites. “The delay in EPA certification can have dire consequences for both community health and the environment,” O’Carroll warned.

As of now, Donegal’s compliance rate is slightly above the national average of 10%, but this still signals a troubling trend. The findings underscore the need for immediate action from local authorities to address these neglected areas before they pose greater risks to the community.

Authorities are expected to respond to this report in the coming days, and residents are urged to stay informed about developments regarding these hazardous sites. The outcome of this situation could have lasting implications for public health and environmental policies in Donegal.
