Urgent Call for N15 Bus Shelters as Children Stand in Rain
UPDATE: Local Councillor Gary Doherty has raised urgent concerns over the plight of schoolchildren left standing in the rain while waiting for buses along the N15. At the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District meeting today, he highlighted a severe lack of bus shelters that is putting students at risk of exposure to harsh weather conditions.
“It’s unacceptable that children are soaked through every morning while waiting for transport,” Cllr Doherty stated. “We’ve repeatedly requested these bus shelters, yet nothing has changed.” He emphasized that this issue is particularly evident along the busy N15 route, where children are often left without any form of protection from the elements.
The Councillor expressed his empathy for the students, saying, “I feel so sorry for them because they’ve nowhere to go. It’s a simple request for a bit of shelter while they wait for their buses.”
This lack of infrastructure not only endangers the health of children but also undermines active travel projects being implemented across Donegal. “Promoting public transport is essential for encouraging people to leave their cars behind,” Cllr Doherty added. “However, without basic facilities like bus shelters, it’s difficult to convince anyone, especially students, to switch from private vehicles to public transport.”
The call for immediate action has gained traction as parents and community members express their frustration over the situation. Many are questioning why this issue has not been prioritized despite repeated requests to local authorities.
Cllr Doherty concluded, “It’s a basic necessity for our community. We must prioritize the safety and comfort of our children who rely on public transport.”
Authorities are now under pressure to address this urgent matter, with local residents eagerly awaiting a commitment to install the much-needed bus shelters. As winter approaches, the need for action is more pressing than ever to ensure that schoolchildren are not left vulnerable to the elements while waiting for their buses.
