HSE Urges Flu Vaccination as Cases Double in Just One Week

UPDATE: The Health Service Executive (HSE) has urgently called on all eligible individuals in Ireland to receive the flu vaccine immediately, as new figures reveal that emergency department presentations and hospitalizations from flu have doubled in just one week. This alarming surge comes as total flu cases reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) have more than doubled, indicating an escalating health crisis within communities.

Latest data shows 418 cases were reported in hospitals for the week ending November 29, 2023, compared to only 213 cases the previous week. Dr. Colm Henry, HSE Chief Clinical Officer, emphasized the urgent need for vaccination, stating, “We are seeing a rapid increase in cases of patients with influenza, including those requiring hospitalization.”

This year’s flu season has started earlier than usual, raising concerns for vulnerable populations, including those over 60 years old, pregnant women, individuals with underlying medical conditions, and the immunocompromised. Dr. Henry added, “It is imperative that these groups take action now to protect themselves.”

The current spike in flu cases is largely attributed to the AH3N2 variant, with HPSC modeling projecting significant pressures on healthcare services in the weeks ahead. As healthcare systems brace for impact, Dr. Henry particularly urged healthcare workers to get vaccinated, noting their increased exposure to the virus.

“By getting vaccinated, healthcare workers are protecting themselves, their families, and the patients they care for,” Dr. Henry stated.

With the busy holiday season approaching, now is the crucial time to get vaccinated, as the flu vaccine takes two weeks to become fully effective. Free flu vaccines are currently available at participating GP clinics and pharmacies, including community vaccination clinics for healthcare workers.

Additionally, all children aged 2 to 17 years are recommended to receive the free flu vaccine. The HSE stresses that everyone can play a role in breaking the chain of flu transmission by practicing good respiratory etiquette, frequent handwashing, and staying home when unwell.

“People with symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infection are advised to stay away from healthcare settings until symptoms have resolved,” advised Dr. Eamonn O’Moore, Director of HSE National Health Protection.
