BREAKING: Tributes are pouring in for renowned cancer charity campaigner, James “Jim Chonaill” O’Donnell, who passed away yesterday at the age of 65 at his home in Ranafast, Annagry. His death marks a profound loss for the community he dedicated over 20 years to advocating for cancer patients in the northwest region of Ireland.

Local politician, TD Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher, expressed deep sorrow at Jim’s passing, calling him a man of “unwavering dedication” and a “loyal friend.” O’Donnell’s legacy includes his roles as the PRO and later as Chairman of Co-operating for Cancer Care NorthWest, where he tirelessly fought for improved cancer services.

In 2005, Jim began his advocacy with Donegal Action for Cancer Care, a commitment that would see him become a pivotal voice for patients. He successfully campaigned for a permanent breast surgeon in Letterkenny and was instrumental in securing cross-border radiotherapy services at Altnagelvin. This campaign received significant funding from the Irish Government, demonstrating the impact of his work.

“He traveled frequently to Dublin and Stormont, advocating for the needs of cancer patients,” said Gallagher. “His efforts were relentless, ensuring voices were heard at the highest levels.”

Jim’s dedication extended beyond advocacy; he was known for his personal connections, canvassing alongside Gallagher during political campaigns, building relationships throughout Donegal and beyond. Gallagher remarked, “He was a true ambassador for Donegal,” offering his condolences to Jim’s wife, Ita, and the entire family.

Funeral arrangements have been announced, with Jim’s remains set to repose at his home in Ranafast starting tomorrow, December 3, from 1 PM to 8 PM, and on Thursday, December 4, from 12 PM to 8 PM. The Rosary will be held nightly at 8 PM. His Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, December 5, at 11 AM in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church, Annagry, followed by burial in the new graveyard.

Family flowers only are requested, with donations in lieu to the Donegal Hospice. The Funeral Mass will be live-streamed on Kieran Roarty Funeral Director’s Facebook page and on the Annagry Parish webcam, allowing friends and family to pay their respects from afar.

Jim O’Donnell’s legacy as a champion for cancer care will continue to inspire many. His unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on a community.
