Galway Taxi Drivers Launch Urgent Go-Slow Protest Over Uber Fares
UPDATE: Approximately 50 taxi drivers in Galway are staging a significant go-slow protest across key city routes this evening, including Eyre Square, College Road, and Lough Atalia. The protest, which began earlier today, is aimed at pressuring Uber to enter discussions regarding its controversial fixed fares plan.
As of now, the protest is having a limited impact on traffic, as many motorists appear to have avoided these areas following advance notice. The taxi drivers, who are also protesting simultaneously in Dublin, are determined to keep the pressure on until they receive a response from Uber.
The protesters are demanding intervention from the Minister for Transport to compel Uber to negotiate with them, citing concerns over unfair pricing practices that threaten their livelihoods. Speaking to FYI Galway reporter James Varley, several drivers expressed frustration and the need for action.
“We are here for our rights and the welfare of our families. Uber’s fixed fare plan is pushing us out,” one driver stated passionately.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The ongoing protests are expected to continue until a satisfactory dialogue is established. Drivers are urging the public to support their cause, highlighting the essential role of local taxi services in Galway.
As this situation develops, residents and commuters should stay informed about potential changes in traffic patterns and further protests. The taxi drivers have made it clear that they will remain on the streets until their demands are met.
This urgent protest highlights the growing tensions within the taxi industry as drivers advocate for fair treatment and sustainable practices. Expect more updates as this story unfolds.
