Labour Urges Overhaul of Trans Healthcare as Black Market Use Rises
One in three transgender individuals in Ireland are reportedly sourcing their healthcare medications from the black market, according to the Labour Party. This alarming statistic has prompted the party to call for significant improvements in gender-affirming care across the country. During a recent session in the Dáil, Labour introduced a motion advocating for the establishment of a new National Clinical Programme for transgender healthcare.
Labour TD Marie Sherlock emphasized the inadequacies of the current healthcare system, highlighting the absence of dedicated services for adolescents, prolonged wait times exceeding four years, and a lack of recruitment in the sector over the past five years. She stated, “Vulnerable young people are being forced to wait four and a half years before they can even get an initial appointment with the national gender service. That is a lifetime to a young vulnerable person who desperately needs support.”
Research conducted by Belong To and Trinity College Dublin indicates that approximately 30% of transgender individuals in Ireland are self-medicating with drugs obtained from illicit sources. Sherlock underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of Ireland’s transgender healthcare model, advocating for a system grounded in informed consent and respect for bodily autonomy.
The proposed changes include the establishment of multidisciplinary teams, psychological and social support systems, a consistent continuum of care from adolescence to adulthood, and extensive training for general practitioners on prescribing and monitoring treatments. Sherlock concluded her remarks by stressing the importance of dignity, safety, and timely access to care for transgender individuals, stating, “These are our neighbours, our children, our colleagues and our friends. They deserve dignity, safety and timely care. The Government must act now.”
The discussion regarding transgender rights has become increasingly contentious in recent years, particularly since the enactment of the Gender Recognition Act in 2015. Sherlock noted a troubling rise in hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community, stating, “The war on LGBTQ+ rights has taken a devastating and disgusting turn in recent years across the world.”
In response, Health Minister Jennifer Caroll-MacNeill acknowledged the divisive nature of the ongoing debate surrounding transgender rights, which she noted appears to be influenced by discussions in the United Kingdom. While recognizing that improvements are needed in healthcare for gender-diverse individuals, she also criticized misconceptions surrounding transgender identities.
Speaking in the Dáil, Caroll-MacNeill remarked, “We could see it coming, and I recall speaking with trans people prior to that, who had said to me the sort of fearful things that were being touted at that time, that people were going to come into changing rooms, for example, dressed up as men. I mean, the nonsense of it. The sheer nonsense of it. We all know that.”
Leader of Aontú, Peadar Tóibín, also contributed to the debate, recognizing the reality of gender dysphoria while advocating for an evidence-based approach to transgender healthcare. He expressed concerns regarding the use of chemical interventions, puberty blockers, and irreversible surgeries, underscoring the need for careful consideration of these treatments.
As discussions continue, the Labour Party remains steadfast in its commitment to reforming transgender healthcare in Ireland, seeking to ensure that all individuals have access to safe, respectful, and timely medical support.
