Urgent Call for New Garda Station in Carndonagh as Plans Progress
UPDATE: Renewed calls for a new Garda station in Carndonagh are gaining momentum as a preliminary business case is underway. Inishowen-based councillor Albert Doherty expressed optimism today, emphasizing the urgent need for this facility to support North Inishowen, particularly following the station’s classification as “not fit for purpose” back in 2018.
The ongoing discussions come after Deputy Pádraig MacLochlainn raised a parliamentary question, highlighting that the business case for the new station is progressing. This pivotal move could significantly enhance local policing and safety measures for residents.
Cllr Doherty plans to directly address the proposal with Minister Jim O’Callaghan during his visit to the county today, aiming to ensure that this project remains a priority. Residents have long awaited a modern facility that meets the needs of the community and supports law enforcement efforts effectively.
The absence of a suitable Garda station has been a pressing issue for years, particularly as Carndonagh’s population continues to grow. The previous station was omitted from the Garda Building and Refurbishment Programme 2016-2021, leaving many residents concerned about their safety and the adequacy of local policing services.
As the situation develops, community members are encouraged to voice their support for the establishment of a new Garda station. This is not just a matter of infrastructure but a vital step towards enhancing community security.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds and as local officials push for action on this essential public service.
