Nigel Farage Faces Growing Racism Allegations at Press Conference

Nigel Farage has publicly criticized broadcasters for probing into allegations of his past racist and anti-Semitic behavior during a press conference in London. The scrutiny intensified as 28 former schoolmates came forward, sharing their recollections of Farage’s alleged conduct during their time at Dulwich College. The leader of Reform UK suggested a boycott of the BBC and implied that ITV had its own accountability issues, repeatedly referencing the late comedian Bernard Manning, who was notorious for his controversial and often offensive material.

During the heated press conference, Farage’s responses came in the wake of additional allegations made to The Guardian. Five more former pupils reported witnessing deeply offensive remarks attributed to him. Many of these individuals stated they felt compelled to speak out due to Farage’s dismissive reaction to earlier claims. Richard Tice, deputy leader of Reform UK, labeled these allegations as fabrications, asserting that they lacked credibility.

Among the individuals who have shared their experiences is Peter Ettedgui, an Emmy- and Bafta-winning director. He recounted incidents where Farage allegedly made derogatory remarks such as “Hitler was right” and “Gas them” during school. Another former classmate, Nick Hearn, corroborated these claims, describing Farage’s behavior as persistent and vindictive rather than mere banter. Hearn stated, “He had a reputation in school for being a racist. I think he should come clean about his inappropriate behavior as a young man and apologise.”

The allegations extend to other former pupils, including Mark Bridges, who characterized Farage as a “racist bully.” Bridges remembered witnessing Farage harass Ettedgui repeatedly. Furthermore, Andy Field, an NHS doctor, recalled an incident involving Farage burning a school roll when he noted that there were more students named Patel than Smith, a claim supported by a school record from 1980.

Another pupil of Asian descent described Farage as openly racist, recalling instances where he would shout comments during assemblies, specifically targeting the name Patel. This former classmate stated that Farage’s behavior seemed obsessive and aimed at drawing attention to those with non-English names.

Farage’s lawyer has categorically denied the allegations, asserting that the claims of racist or anti-Semitic behavior are unfounded. Farage himself acknowledged that some of his remarks might be interpreted differently today but maintained that he never directed racist comments at individuals. When pressed about the allegations, he stated, “Recollections may vary,” suggesting that perspectives on past events differ among individuals.

In a separate political context, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Farage as a “toxic, divisive disgrace” following remarks Farage made about Glasgow’s demographics. Starmer emphasized the importance of celebrating diversity and compassion within communities, contrasting Farage’s narrative with the values he believes Glasgow represents.
